3. Explorer Project and Living History Museum: Thank you for taking the time to help your child with his/her explorer reading and research over the past few weeks! As a class, we have been discussing the logistics and costumes for the Living History Museum. Please work with your child to begin to plan out what he/she will need to wear to best represent his/her explorer. Please do NOT buy anything, and use what you already have in the house. If there is a prop or item of clothing your child needs, we will ask other students to accommodate. In turn, we may ask to borrow something from your house, so stay tuned. On the morning of the Living History Museum, students should come to school fully dressed in their costume- students can bring a change of clothes for the remainder of the day. Since our classrooms can get very hot, please help your child improvise an appropriate costume if it's a hot day (especially if he/she is an Arctic explorer)! We hope to see everyone at the Living History Museum on Wednesday, June 17th from 8-8:30am!

2. Explorer Project Update: Students continue to move forward with the explorer project and have done well to identify their explorer’s target accomplishment. From here, students will work to complete various pieces of a biographical information tri-fold about their explorer. Students will create and share timelines, maps, pictures, writing samples, and even create a mixed-media doll in art class to represent their explorer.
The majority of the project will be done in school, but we encourage and welcome all support you can give students in researching and finding materials about their explorer. We will continue to keep you updated as we move through this project.
The finalized date for the Living History Museum (the event that this project culminates in) is Wednesday, June 17th. Please let teachers know right away if you know your child will not be in school on this date so that we can best plan ahead.
3. Math Update: The fourth grade is wrapping up their first post-MCAS math unit (Algebraic Thinking) and will soon begin the final math unit of the year (estimation). In addition, students will take the district wide year-end assessment to help Brookline teachers reassess and evaluate best teaching practices for the math curriculum.
4. Science Update: Over the next few weeks, 4th graders will be returning to their study of Botany! Students will build on what they learned about plants and seed dispersal in the fall by discussing and experimenting with germination, seed structure and plant life cycles. We will also soon be planting our own bean plants and observing them for the remainder of the school year.
5. Fourth Grade Field Day – Thursday, June 18: Thanks to overwhelming family support of the spring raffle, the fourth grade students have earned an all day field day with ice cream at Griggs Park! More information is to come, and please contact your child’s teacher if you’re interested in helping to organize or volunteer for this event.

4th grade monday letter
weeks 31 - 32: monday, april 27 - may 8
1. Tuesday, April 28th is an Early Dismissal Day: Students will be dismissed from their classroom at 12:40 for parent-teacher conferences. Lunch will be served on early dismissal days, so students should plan on bringing or buying their lunch and snack as usual. If you have not signed up for a family conference please contact your child’s teacher about available dates/times to meet.
2. Explorer Project Update: We hope you had time to review the Explorer Packet with your child over April Break. These packets (with ranked choices) are due back to your child’s teacher by Tuesday, April 28th. Fourth grade teachers will then assign each student an explorer that he/she will research and study for the Explorer Project. Over the next two weeks we will provide each student with at least one book from the Driscoll Library, and we will soon be showing students how to use our online databases to find more information. Even with these research materials we’ve provided to the students, we strongly encourage families to take a trip to the town library to seek out additional resources. During the first one-two weeks, part of the nightly 4th grade homework will be to read about their explorer to gain more information and background knowledge on this person. During week three, fourth graders will begin to take notes on their explorer, while keeping the “target” in mind. The “target” is what the explorer did to change the course of history; the “target” is the one (most important) “thing” they did to make them “known”, to make them change history forever, and to make people like us study them! (For example, Amelia Earhart did many things throughout the course of her life that led up to her target (such as fly across The Atlantic on The Friendship with Bill Stultz), but her “target” was when she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic solo. This is what she did to change the course of history; this is what she is remembered for. Yes, there are other amazing things, but we are trying to ZOOM in on the one target. Please help your 4th grader by being a part of this learning experience and helping to point out the “target” for your child’s explorer. We will keep you updated as we move through this project.
3. Math MCAS Reminder: Monday, May 11th and Tuesday, May 12th will be our Math MCAS testing. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest on Sunday and Monday nights, has enough time for a healthy breakfast and arrives promptly at 7:55, so s/he will be ready for a day of math. We ask that you send your child with plenty of healthy snacks and drinks so s/he will have the energy to push through each day!
4. Google Drive Use: 4th grade students have started to use Google Drive to work on writing projects, share documents with their teachers for editing purposes, and to do online research. We would like to remind all students that Google Drive is intended for school work only, that students should keep all passwords safe and secure, and to make wise decisions when/if “sharing” documents with friends.

4TH GRADE MONDAY LETTER
WEEKS 27 - 28: MONDAY, MARCH 21 - April 6
4th Grade MCAS This Week: Wednesday, March 25th and Thursday, March 26th will be our first days of MCAS testing, followed by more MCAS testing next week, on Thursday, April 2nd. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, has enough time for a healthy breakfast and arrives promptly at 7:55, so s/he will be ready for a full day of reading and writing. We ask that you send your child with plenty of healthy snacks and drinks so s/he will have the energy to push through!
No Assigned Homework: Due to MCAS testing this week, no homework will be assigned Tuesday, March 24th - Thursday, March 26th. We hope students will relax and get to bed early on these nights. It is expected that fourth graders maintain their nightly routine of reading for thirty minutes, practicing math facts for five-ten minutes, and practicing their instrument. However, students will not be required to log this in their RMI on these nights.
No School: There will be no school on Friday, April 3rd in observance of Good Friday. Have a great long weekend!
April Vacation: There will be no school from Monday, April 20th - Friday, April 24th, for April Vacation. As always, if you are planning on leaving early for vacation or returning late, please let your child's classroom teacher know as soon as possible so teachers can help manage a smooth transition.
Choosing an Explorer to Research: Over the next month, fourth graders will begin to think about one explorer who they would like to research and learn more about for their 4th Grade Research Project (AKA: “The Explorer Project”). A packet will be coming home right before April Vacation that provides a list of the possible explorers students can research for this project. After reading through the packet, we ask each student to rank his/her top five choices. We encourage families to take an active role in this ranking process, which is why we don't expect it back at school until the week after April Vacation (giving you a week to look it over as a family). If your child is interested in studying an explorer that is not on the list, he/she is more than welcome to! However, please know that we have materials set aside in the Driscoll Library for the explorers on the list. There may be additional materials in our Library, but we encourage families that choose an explorer not on the list to make a trip to the Boston or Brookline Public Library to find research materials. The next step will be when we assign each student his/her explorer to study, which will be done after April Vacation by the 4th grade teachers. More news about this research project will be included in each Monday Letter, so please be sure to stay tuned!

weeks 21 - 22: monday, February 2 - 13
1. String Concert: Grades 4-8 will have their first string concert on February 3rd at 7pm. The concert will have students from both Devotion and Driscoll, and will take place at Devotion (345 Harvard St.).
2. Community Meeting – 4W Host: On Friday, February 6th 4W will host Community Meeting in the theatre from 8:15-8:45am. We hope to see many friends and families there!
3. Math Chapter 7 & 8 - Fractions & Decimals: Upon returning from winter break, fourth graders took an assessment to closely reflect their prior knowledge with fractions and decimals. Depending upon what they already know and need to learn, students will be studying math with Miss Warfield, Mr. Nifoussi, or Ms. Medina for the next 7-8 weeks. Our goal in putting students in leveled groups is to ensure that all students’ needs are met. These new math groups will begin on Wednesday, February 4th, and will tentatively run until Friday, March 27th.
4. Chinese New Year: Join us for our annual celebration of Chinese New Year on Friday, February 13th! The fourth grade will be joined by grades K, 2, 6 and 8 in the Driscoll Theater from 8:30-9:20. The parade through the school will begin at 8:20.
5. February Vacation: There will be no school for February Vacation from Monday, February 16th- Friday, February 20th. As always, if you are planning on leaving early for vacation or returning late, please let your child’s classroom teacher know as soon as possible so teachers can help manage a smooth transition.
6. Chaperones (Still) Needed: The 4th grade will travel to the Harvard Museum of Natural History on Thursday, February 26th and we still need chaperones! Chaperones are expected to be at the school at 7:55 and stay with us until 2pm. Chaperones are also asked to use the MBTA along with teachers and students, so please bring either a Charlie Card or fare money. Please contact your classroom teacher if you are interested in chaperoning. Each class may only bring 4 chaperones, but we will try to include any parents that have not yet had the chance to chaperone this year and are interested in coming with us.
7. Valentine’s Day Celebrations: Students have begun to inquire about whether classes will have Valentine’s Day activities. While we will not be having big celebrations, classes will have time on Friday, February 13th to exchange valentines if students choose to bring them. This is completely optional for students and families. However, we do ask that if students choose to bring in valentines, that they provide them for the whole class, and not just some students. If you choose to include small candies or treats, please also keep allergies in mind.
